According to the United Nations Environmental Programme, plant-based diets are more environmentally sustainable than diets rich in animal products - because they use fewer natural resources and are associated with much less environmental damage.
Animal agriculture is currently the leading cause of deforestation, water pollution, freshwater depletion and oceanic dead zones.
It is also one of the largest contributors of greenhouse gas emissions.

Unnatural growth, forced impregnation, intensive confinement and mutilations are all standard practices performed on farmed animals. These farms are the source for the vast majority of all animal products consumed and purchased in restaurants and grocery stores. And many small farms have also adopted these practices to remain competitive. While affording a few improvements, cage-free, free-range and humane labeled animal products still also subject animals to most of the same practices.
Many people find all these modern animal agriculture practices conflict with their own personal sense of right and wrong.
Most animals raised on modern agricultural farms spend their lifetimes in cages, where they cannot move other than standing up or sitting down, must spend their lives in poorly ventilated sheds with no exposure to the outdoors and undergo bodily mutilations such as castration, tail and teeth removals and debeaking with no anesthetic.
